Break-ups

I went to Level 2 in Felixstowe and young people gave me some relationship advice that they would like to give to other young people going through a break up of a romantic partner or friend.

“Sometimes adults think that because we are still young we can’t be ‘in love’, but I think we can.”

“If you’re going through a break up speak to an adult rather than try to get them to get back with you.”

“Talk about it so you don’t get overwhelmed.”

“Don’t waste time on being annoyed at someone who doesn’t want to be with you – it’s not worth it, it will make you more unhappy.”

We can feel grief after a break-up - we can miss what we had. Sometimes it's not logical, we wonder what went wrong and our ego gets bruised.

Remember it's natural to feel sad. Be kind to yourself and reach out and tell someone how you feel. Time is a good healer.

Family break ups

This lead us on to talking about family break ups and how it can be a really difficult and confusing time. The way you feel can be made even worse if you have the stress of exams looming or you feel like you don’t know who to turn to.

“I have to think about the short term upset [of leaving] and compare this with the long term view of happiness.”

“Speak to an adult. It has really helped me speaking to people at youth club and teachers at school.”

Whatever you are going through you are not alone. each out and tell someone how you are feeling - a parent, carer, trusted adult or a friend.

If you would rather speak to someone else try kooth.com or our helplines directory and explore our mind section for more support for your emotional wellbeing.

Take care and look after each other <3 <3
