Making an appointment
How to make an appointment with a doctor
Use the NHS app, call the surgery or visit their website to make an appointment.
Online: Many GP practices now offer online booking, allowing you to request appointments throughout the day. Check the website for your GP to see if this is available.
NHS App: The NHS app allows you to book, view and manage appointments
Phone: Call your doctor’s surgery and say what’s going on. You can ask for a phone call, face-to-face or same day slot if urgent.
When you contact them, they should respond or make contact with you, within 2 working days.
Some GP practices require you to call at a certain time to request a same day appointment – check on their website or ask on a phone call if this is the case at your practice.
How to register with a doctor’s surgery
Everyone in England can register with a GP surgery or change their GP surgery for free. You can register with most surgeries online.
What you need to register with a GP surgery
You will be asked to give your name, date of birth and address. You do not need ID, proof of address or proof of immigration status.
As part of registering you’ll also be asked for:
- the name and address of an emergency contact
- the name and address of the GP you’re registered with now, if you have one
- the name and address of your carer, if you have one
Before you make an appointment with your GP surgery, think about which other services might be able to help.
A pharmacy offers advice and treatment for common illnesses like coughs and colds, aches and pains that do not need a prescription. Read about how pharmacies can help. You don’t usually need an appointment.
Call NHS 111 if you have an urgent medical problem, but you’re not sure what to do.
Visit 111 online for urgent medical advice for people aged 5 and over only.
Visit a sexual health clinic for testing for sexually transmitted infections and contraception advice
If you are not registered or you are away from home:
- You can call any GP surgery to get emergency treatment for up to 14 days if you’re not registered with a GP surgery or are away from home.
- If your treatment will last longer than 14 days, you’ll have to register as a temporary or permanent resident.
- If you do not have a permanent address, you can register with a GP surgery using a temporary address or the address of the GP surgery
