June is PRIDE month and we thought it would be great to hear from the wonderful Outreach Youth about PRIDE and what it means to some of them.
PRIDE Month
Pride Month happens in June and it is dedicated to the celebration and commemoration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer + pride, highlighting the movement for LGBT*Q+ rights and celebrating LGBTQ culture.
Held in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which was a series of protests by members of the gay community in Manhattan in New York, during June 28, 1969. The riots, which became a watershed moment that transformed queer liberation in the States, was in response to police raids and violence against the community.
At Outreach youth we love PRIDE. This is what PRIDE means to some of us;
- ‘Inclusivity and celebration of equality and diversity, for everyone.’
- ‘Time to remember that your identity is valid.’
- ‘A riot, to bring political change.’
- ‘It’s a community thing – safe spaces, eclectic groups of LGBT*Q+ people.’
- ‘ Highlights Queer history, highlighting positive role models who have made the rights we have today, reality.’
- ‘A time to take up space as LGBT*Q+ people.’
- ‘A celebration of how far we have come, balanced between celebration and activism, finding communities.’
- ‘A time when other non-out young LGBT*Q+ people can see other young people like them.’
- ‘Rainbows, noise, celebration and representation.’
