What does loneliness feel like?

Loneliness is an empty feeling.

You feel disconnected from others.

You can have lots of people around you, but still feel lonely.

Feeling lonely is normal – everyone feels this way sometimes.

Feelings of loneliness can occur when you feel low, anxious or stressed.

What makes people feel lonely?

  • Moving to a new area.
  • Friends moving away.
  • Finishing school, college or university.
  • Being unemployed or having money worries.
  • Falling out with friends or growing apart.
  • Relationship break ups.
  • The death of someone close to you.
  • Having to care for a family member.

To reduce loneliness

  • Ask yourself what is making you feel lonely? How could I change this?
  • Look after yourself
  • Reduce time spent on social media – heavy social media usage increases loneliness as it makes you feel like everyone else is having an amazing time, but social media only captures the best bits of people’s lives they want you to see.
  • Remember you are loved and valued by those around you.
  • Re-connect with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
  • Join a group or club – find a club or activity.
  • Try the Befriending Scheme
