“What are they?“
In a nutshell, an apprenticeship is paid learning. It is an excellent way to combine on the job learning with a working environment. An apprenticeship allows you to grow and thrive in the workplace by giving you all the skills that an employer would want.
Apprenticeships combine both work with training and give you opportunities to make some great connections to the industry that you want to have a career in, however, there are some differences.
Each apprenticeship is different depending on the employer and the framework, but they have to last a minimum of 12 months.
To start an apprenticeship, you’ll need to be:
- 16 or over
- living in England
- not in full-time education
Myth busting apprenticeships: 1) Apprenticeships are only for young people. No! You can be any age but you must be over 16. 2) Apprenticeships are only for people who can't go to uni. No! Level 5 and 6 apprenticeships are equivalent to undergraduate. Level 7 is equivalent to Masters. 3) You'll just be making tea. No! As an apprentice you will be a proper member of the team who is supported in all aspects of their role.
Are you a care leaver? Suffolk County Council, create their own employment opportunities for care leavers. The Family Business model provides apprenticeships for care leavers in various teams around the Council. Find out more on our 'Leaving Care' page.
Inclusive Apprenticeships
Inclusive apprenticeships provide a supportive environment for learners to develop and succeed in their chosen careers.
Apprentices will be required to achieve from entry level 3 up to level 2 functional skills in Math and English (unless exempt) as part of the apprenticeship. In addition, employers may specify candidate requirements within the details of an apprenticeship vacancy.
The hours and duration of the apprenticeship can be adjusted to support your needs, if agreed by both the employer and the apprentice.
